Only Jesus can overcome our unbelief. He comes to us as people who ought to be strangers. By our sins we’ve made ourselves enemies of God. He ought to pass right by us, out of our lives, leaving us to the condemnation we’ve earned for ourselves. But instead he enters our lives with his saving Gospel. He speaks his promises and his good news of Salvation into our hearts. He works a miracle in us, taking our hatred for him and his word and working in us repentance and faith. He opens our eyes to see Jesus not as a threat that needs to be silenced or eliminated, but as our loving Savior who comes to shed his own blood and offer his own life on the cross for us.
