When we celebrate the Baptism of Jesus, we celebrate our own Baptism. We celebrate God’s gifts of the forgiveness of sins, new life, and salvation that is ours in Baptism. Through the washing of water and the Word Jesus is at work. Water is splashed on us by a minister who has no power of his own, but through it Jesus baptizes us with the Holy Spirit and the fire of his love. The Words of the Father become his words to us. “You are my Son, whom I love. I am well pleased with you.”
